On February 9th, 2022, Nintendo hosted the Nintendo Direct, where they announced many new games and gave updates on upcoming games/DLC for previously released games.

The first announcement in the Direct was Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, a spin-off game from the Fire Emblem series that takes place in the same world as Fire Emblem: Three Houses, with a similar gameplay style to that of Koei Tecmo’s popular Warriors games.

The next major announcement was Mario Strikers: Battle League, a Super Mario series spin-off game, where characters from the Mario series compete against each other in soccer matches. This will be the first Mario Strikers game since Mario Strikers Charged was released for the Wii in 2007.

Splatoon 3, which is set to release for the Nintendo Switch later this year had some more info revealed, mainly about the fan-favorite “Salmon Run” game mode from the second game, where they revealed new bosses, maps, and gameplay features.

The 4th best-selling game of all time, Wii Sports, will be coming to the Switch. Nintendo Switch Sports will feature six sports at launch; soccer, volleyball, bowling, tennis, badminton, and chambara (swordplay), with golf to be added as a free update this fall.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gets paid DLC after five years with the Booster Course Pack, bringing back many courses from past games in the Mario Kart series, with a total of 48 courses to be added in six waves by the end of 2023. The first wave was released on March 18th.

At the end of the presentation, the final announcement was made to be Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the next installment in the Xenoblade Chronicles series. While we do not yet know much about this game, the two protagonists of the game are named Noah and Mio, and the game is said to have connections to the previous two games.

Finally, although not in the Nintendo Direct, on February 27th, a Pokemon Presents was held, where new information is shared with fans of the Pokemon franchise. Although there was not much of note from the presentation, the next Pokemon games were revealed, titled Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet were revealed, set to be released in late 2022. Along with the game, three new Pokemon were revealed; the grass type Sprigatito, the fire type Fuecoco, and the water type Quaxly.
